Our Pagoda’s History
Our Pagoda’s Canadian history started back in July of 1987 during Klondike Days. Howard Pechet, owner of Canada’s renowned Mayfield Inn saw the stunning Thai Pavilion, known as a Pagoda or Sala Temple presented at the exhibition, as Thailand was the featured country that year.
The 100 square-metre structure, made entirely of seasoned teak, each piece hand carved and painted, was built by 12 Thai carpenters and took 15 weeks to assemble. It was disassembled in Thailand, each piece numbered and moved to Edmonton to be reassembled, where it stood guard at the entrance of the Kingdom of Thailand Exhibit at the festival’s trade show at Edmonton Northlands.
In discussions with the Alberta Thai Association, who were assisting with the event, he learned they were searching for a new home for their beloved Sala, as it was too expensive to return it to its native land of Thailand. Howard loved it and thought it would be perfect addition to the popular Mayfield Inn’s Courtyard. While it was appraised at $100,000, the association wanted the structure to remain in Canada and sold it to Howard for $50,000.
When purchased back in 1987, Howard retained the same Thai carpenters to move the Sala from Northlands to the Mayfield Inn. The process took about 12 weeks and there it lived for 25 years. It served as a beautiful back drop for countless weddings, special events and celebrations.
The hotel was sold by Howard in the early 90’s, and in 2012 the new owners had begun renovating the Mayfield Inn. As they moved ahead with renovations for the hotel, the beloved Sala Pagoda didn’t fit in with the new décor, so it went up for sale. Howard Pechet had a vision to one day resurrect the Pagoda in one of his Stagewest properties, so he repurchased it.
After year’s in storage, 2020 created a unique opportunity to finally rebuild the Pagoda in the Lobby of Stagewest Hospitality’s, Medicine Hat Lodge. After a year of ups and downs and countless hours of construction, Teakwood Family Restaurant & Lounge is now open in the Medicine Hat Lodge! We are excited to welcome our guests to enjoy the stunning centrepiece of our new family restaurant.
